5G RedCap来了!标准就绪,产业生态快速成熟

6月10日专稿(蒋均牧)疫情的反复亦未能阻止全球部署和商用5G的热情。GSA数据显示,截至今年3月底,148个国家或地区的491家运营商投资于推出5G服务的相关举措,其中85个国家或地区的213家运营商已推出商用5G服务,而已发布的5G终端也达到了1334款。产业发展,标准先行。就在刚刚结束的3GPP RAN#96会议上,3GPP宣布R17标准冻结。历经R15、R16和R17三个版本,至此5G技术的全貌已呈现在我们面前。同时,这也为未来新一轮的创新演进即5G-Advanced奠定了基础。作为一个关键里程碑,R17不仅为5G系统的多项基础性技术带来更多增强及扩展特性,例如工业物联网增强、定位增强、V2X增强、终端节能、覆盖增强、扩展的直连通信功能、非地面通信等,更通过引入RedCap,扩大了5G的应用范围,将之普及到更多物联场景,为万物互联的智能世界的到来铺平了道路。何谓RedCap?“青春版”5G了解下RedCap这个名词或许稍显陌生,但许多人一定对它原先的名字NR-Light或NR-Lite有所耳闻。所谓RedCap,即是Reduced Capability,它是R17阶段针对中高速连接专门立项研究的一种新技术标准,可以将之视作“青春版”的5G。如果说前几代移动通信技术主要解决的是人与人之间的连接问题,那么5G在设计之初的一个重要目标便是万物互联,以此来赋能千行百业的数字化转型。有预测认为,到2035年,5G将驱动全球各行业产出增长13.2万亿美元,创造2230万个就业机会。然而随着5G与实体经济融合的日益深化,一些问题也浮出了水面。其中的一大痛点,就在于5G终端芯片和模组的高昂成本,很大程度上阻碍了5G在垂直行业的落地应用。RedCap就是产业界对此给出的解决方案。不同于需要大带宽、高速率支持的智能手机,有些场景下的物联终端有一定性能要求但又没那么高。RedCap通过支持较低复杂程度的5G终端,实现了性能和成本之间的平衡。其应用范围广泛,主要涵盖工业无线传感器、视频监控和智能可穿戴设备三大场景,预计到2030年全球连接数将达到近百亿。具体而言,RedCap相对于NR做了很多精简化和定制化,包括:低成本:通过减少终端带宽,在Sub-6GHz频段下其最大带宽为20MHz;减少终端接收天线和层数,支持1收或2收,大幅降低5G终端芯片和模组的成本,预计RedCap模组成本相对eMBB可以降低5倍,规模商用的模组价格可以与Cat.4相当。大容量和高效共存:通过独立初始BWP和非小区定义的同步信号工作在5G网络上,并与eMBB终端高效共存,充分发挥5G大带宽优势和大系统容量等代际差异。可选支持更多功能:包括较低时延、切片、定位、低功耗等能力。标准、生态两手硬,RedCap商用启航在即从技术特性上可以看到,RedCap介于eMBB和以NB-IoT、LTE-M为代表的LPWA之间,填补了5G在中高速连接领域乃至在eMBB、uRLLC和mMTC“中间地带”的空白,其所面向的场景亦有着极其广袤的市场空间。因此,它自诞生以来便备受产业界关注也并不那么难以令人理解。2019年6月,在3GPP RAN#84会议上,RedCap以R17研究项目的形式首次出现;2021年3月,3GPP正式通过了NR RedCap UE标准化项目的立项。而此次R17标准冻结,标志着RedCap第一版标准的完成,已经商用就绪。在后续演进方面,R18也已确定了RedCap增强的课题,主要方向包括研究进一步降低用户终端复杂度的技术、研究降低功耗的技术等。与此同时,RedCap产业生态正在快速成熟。产业政策方面,国家工业和信息化部等十部委联合印发的《5G应用“扬帆”行动计划(2021-2023年)》明确提出,加快弥补产业短板弱项,加快轻量化5G芯片模组的研发及产业化,进一步提升终端模组性价比;实现5G物联网终端用户数年均增长率超200%。其中着重提到的5G+工业互联网、5G+智慧城市等垂直行业,以及智能安防监控、新型穿戴设备、远程操控设备、高清视频监控等应用领域,预计将成为RedCap大显身手的舞台。IMT 2020(5G)推进组对RedCap寄予厚望,计划2022年完成应用场景与关键技术研究、关键技术测试规范制定、开展关键技术测试;2023年面向商用需求,制定终端、系统设备规范及测试规范,开展端到端测试和互操作测试。芯片、模块方面,高通、紫光展锐、联发科等主流芯片厂商和国内外领先无线模组供应商都在积极参与和推动RedCap的发展进程,提前启动了相关研发工作,包括已经推出了RedCap原型系统。行业应用方面,RedCap赢得了多个垂直行业的青睐,制造、电力、智慧城市、安防等行业均大力投入,推进RedCap在具体场景、技术和产品解决方案的定义和适配。作为产业生态的中坚力量,一些领先运营商也表示将视3GPP标准化进展,适时引入RedCap。最近,中国移动研究院发布了《中国移动5G RedCap技术白皮书》,明确了RedCap在5G体系中的技术定位,深度解析了RedCap关键技术特性,并在此基础上开展RedCap市场前景分析及与关键应用场景的适配性研究,以促使RedCap能够更好服务于市场需求。根据产业经验,以及标准和产业生态的完备度,预计到2023年我们就有望看到RedCap商用终端的发布,以及部分场景的应用开启。当前,5G赋能千行百业正处在由“落地生根”加速迈向“开花结果”的关键阶段,RedCap标准的就绪,补齐了差异化物联场景和终端成本上的短板,为5G行业应用的规模复制推广提供了一大利器。从长远来看,RedCap也提供了一条新的蜂窝物联网演进路径,为5G产业未来十年可持续发展和万物互联的实现注入强劲动力。新标准,新物联,新商业,RedCap的未来值得期待。

5G RedCap is here! Standards are in place, and the industrial ecosystem is maturing rapidly. What is RedCap? Youth Edition 5G may be a little unfamiliar to the term RedCap, but many people must have heard of its original name NR-Light or NR-Lite. The so-called RedCap stands for Reduced Capability. It is a new technology standard specially researched for medium- and high-speed connections in the R17 stage. It can be regarded as the youth version of 5G. If the previous generations of mobile communication technology mainly solved the problem of connection between people, then an important goal of 5G at the beginning of its design was to connect everything, so as to empower the digital transformation of thousands of industries. It is predicted that by 2035, 5G will drive global industry output growth by US 13.2 trillion and create 22.3 million jobs. However, as the integration of 5G and the real economy deepens, some problems have also surfaced. One of the major pain points is the high cost of 5G terminal chips and modules, which has largely hindered the implementation of 5G in vertical industries. RedCap is the industry s solution to this problem. Unlike smartphones that require large bandwidth and high-speed support, IoT terminals in some scenarios have certain performance requirements but are not that high. RedCap achieves a balance between performance and cost by supporting lower complexity 5G terminals. It has a wide range of applications, mainly covering three major scenarios: industrial wireless sensors, video surveillance and smart wearable devices. It is expected that the number of global connections will reach nearly 10 billion by 2030. Specifically, RedCap has made many simplifications and customizations compared to NR, including: low cost: by reducing the terminal bandwidth, its maximum bandwidth is 20MHz in the Sub-6GHz frequency band; reducing the number of terminal receiving antennas and layers, supporting 1 or 2 receptions, significantly reducing the cost of 5G terminal chips and modules. It is expected that the cost of RedCap modules can be reduced by 5 times compared to eMBB, and the price of large-scale commercial modules can be comparable to Cat.4. Large capacity and efficient coexistence: It works on the 5G network through independent initial BWP and non-cell-defined synchronization signals, and efficiently coexists with eMBB terminals, giving full play to the intergenerational differences such as 5G's large bandwidth advantages and large system capacity. Optional support for more functions: including lower latency, slicing, positioning, low power consumption and other capabilities. Standards and ecology are both strong, and RedCap is about to be commercialized. From the technical characteristics, we can see that RedCap is between eMBB and LPWA represented by NB-IoT and LTE-M, filling the gap of 5G in the medium and high-speed connection field and even in the middle zone of eMBB, uRLLC and mMTC. The scenarios it targets also have extremely broad market space. Therefore, it is not so difficult to understand that it has attracted attention from the industry since its birth. In June 2019, at the 3GPP RAN 84 meeting, RedCap appeared for the first time in the form of an R17 research project; in March 2021, 3GPP officially approved the establishment of the NR RedCap UE standardization project. The freezing of the R17 standard marks the completion of the first version of the RedCap standard and is ready for commercial use. In terms of subsequent evolution, R18 has also identified the topic of RedCap enhancement. The main directions include research on technologies to further reduce the complexity of user terminals and research on technologies to reduce power consumption. At the same time, the RedCap industry ecosystem is maturing rapidly. In terms of industrial policy, the 5G Application Sail Action Plan (2021-2023) jointly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other ten ministries and commissions clearly proposes to speed up the shortcomings of the industry, accelerate the research and development and industrialization of lightweight 5G chip modules, and further improve the cost performance of terminal modules; achieve an average annual growth rate of 5G IoT end users of over 200%. Among them, vertical industries such as 5G+ Industrial Internet and 5G+ Smart City are highlighted, as well as application fields such as intelligent security monitoring, new wearable devices, remote control equipment, and high-definition video surveillance, which are expected to become the stage for RedCap to show its talents The IMT 2020 (5G) promotion group has high hopes for RedCap, and plans to complete research on application scenarios and key technologies, formulate key technology test specifications, and conduct key technology tests in 2022; in 2023, it will formulate terminal and system equipment specifications and test specifications for commercial needs, and carry out end-to-end testing and interoperability testing. In terms of chips and modules, mainstream chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm, UNISOC, and MediaTek, as well as leading domestic and foreign wireless module suppliers, are actively participating in and promoting the development process of RedCap, and have started relevant research and development work in advance, including the launch of the RedCap prototype system. In terms of industry applications, RedCap has won the favor of multiple vertical industries. Manufacturing, electric power, smart cities, security and other industries have invested heavily in promoting the definition and adaptation of RedCap in specific scenarios, technologies and product solutions. As the backbone of the industrial ecosystem, some leading operators have also stated that they will introduce RedCap in due course depending on the progress of 3GPP standardization. Recently, China Mobile Research Institute released the China Mobile 5G RedCap Technology White Paper , which clarified the technical positioning of RedCap in the 5G system, deeply analyzed the key technical characteristics of RedCap, and on this basis, carried out RedCap market prospect analysis and compatibility research with key application scenarios, so as to enable RedCap to better serve market needs. Based on industry experience, as well as the completeness of standards and industrial ecology, it is estimated that by 2023 we are expected to see the release of RedCap commercial terminals and the launch of applications in some scenarios. Currently, 5G empowers thousands of industries and is in a critical stage of accelerating from taking root to flowering and bearing fruit . The readiness of the RedCap standard has filled the shortcomings in differentiated IoT scenarios and terminal costs, and has provided a great tool for the large-scale replication and promotion of 5G industry applications. In the long run, RedCap also provides a new evolution path for cellular IoT, injecting strong impetus into the sustainable development of the 5G industry and the realization of the Internet of Everything in the next ten years.
